Following the Labianca case, a special prosecutor is slated to probe all tax waivers issued by Customs.
All tax waivers in Ghana by the Customs will be probed to ensure that the process was devoid of corruption. This development is in the wake of a recent investigation conducted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, OSP.
The investigation indicated the duo of the Labianco Group of Companies and the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division are involved in waivers malpractices and irregularities.
Africataxreview.com gathered that the investigation is inspired by a recently published investigative report by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, OSP which revealed that senior officials serving as members of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Ports and Habour used their position to get a favourable decision from the Customs Division.
Specifically, a Board of Director’s member that was suspected to have been involved in such an act was Miss Asomah-Hinneh who saw a shortfall of import duties of over ¢1.074 million.
The suspected influenced-peddling was alleged to have led to a reduction in the tax liabilities for her frozen foods company, thus, gaining an undue market advantage in the competitive frozen foods industry where the Labianca Group of Companies operates.
On the flip side, The report signed by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, also indicts the Commissioner of Customs, Col. Kwadwo Damoah (Rtd). However, the commissioner has accused the OSP of malicious intent to discredit the Customs officers.
